I thought I knew the answer, but I was inspired to look it up after seeing this picture on the Grand Teton Brewing Companies FB Page-

On 4 May 1964, the U.S. Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a “distinctive product of the United States," creating the Federal Standards of Identity for Bourbon.

So – on this day where we are recognizing those passing on 9/11, perhaps it is fitting to fill your toasting glass with Bourbon- just to show that we may be knocked down….but never knocked out.
