RIP Barney McKenna 1939-2012

I’m sure there are many of you who are thinking – Who is Barney McKenna.

You shall be forgiven for your lack of knowledge.

Barney played the tenor banjo for the Irish Band – The Dubliners.

He passed away, unexpectedly, on the morning of 5 April 2012 in his home in Howth, Co. Dublin.

I found a video that captured him late in life – and I thought I would share on this day.

Here is the setup for this video- Usually the songs before the first intermission were usually pretty slow.  If you didn’t know know the Dubliners, you would notice an old bearded gentleman sitting to the side (everyone else usually stood the whole concert) just plucking away.  As the band would finish their last song, everyone would do a little solo – until Barney and Eamonn Campbell (on Guitar) were left.  What would then follow would be an outstanding combination of reels that would just keep getting faster and more amazing.  Barney was a true master of his craft – and he will be sorely missed.

Cheers Barney
